Birthdays and Events

It has been a busy 2 weeks.

First it was Hubby’s 50th last week.  So now I am officially married to an old man – especially seeing as though I am 35 (in spirit!)  We didn’t do too much – went for lunch with some friends to celebrate.  Felt rather guilty as I could not think of a decent gift for him.  What do you buy a man who has everything (he has me after all)?  Anyway, a few little metal and wooden puzzles made the gift list from the kids and I owe him a gift still.

Our event is finally over.  It was at the ITB building at OR Tambo International Airport.  The event was the Official Launch Of The Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Foundation And Inauguration Of The Oliver Tambo Memorial Lecture Series, hosted By The Airports Company Of South Africa.

All and sundry from the ANC were invited, along with the CEO’s of most big companies I know.  We were dealing with the Tambo Foundation and dealt extensively with Dali Tambo. It was a high class event with a proper sit down, plated dinner for 500 people.   Now I had my reservations about the event and I anticipated a language barrier- especially seeing as though I have a very British accent.

I was pleasantly surprised and met some wonderful people.   I met a very sweet lady from the Black Sash.  I met Justice Albie Sachs who flew in specifically for the event.  I met loads of people from the OR Tambo municipality in the Eastern Cape and met the ladies from the Watville Church in Benoni.  They were all extremely nice, easy to talk to, very welcoming and all extended their appreciation for a wonderful evening.  In fact I received an email from the lady from the Black Sash this afternoon thanking us once again.

Our President, Mr Jacob Zuma gave a speech.  Now you cannot have an event without something going wrong – and guess what happened – the frigging fire alarm went off just before the President was to give his speech.  So we had to pause the event for 15 minutes while we found the ACSA maintenance manager to sort it out.  Everyone was quite happy to enjoy a breather from the speeches and the alarm going off was well timed.  Maintenance guy sorted the problem out and the event continued.

My main function for the evening was to supervise the accreditation process and handle any problems which arose.  Security was extremely tight as we had the President there and loads of ministers etc.  So I had to go through a security check point every time I went into the venue.  I was going in every 5 minutes to deal with different issues and of course they instead on scanning me and my PINK iphone every time I went in.  Now I was stationed about 2m away from them and I was clearly visible to them every second, but they still insisted on me placing my phone in the little tray and it going through the scanner – EVERY TIME.

Event was well received by all and have had nothing but compliments from all and sundry.

Got home around midnight after the event and now we start production for the next event….

Odds and ends

Last 2 weeks has had me busy with odds and ends.  Have had no time to think about blogging or anything else for that matter.  So I have forced myself to put a few words down tonight.

I had the opportunity of going to my sons annual school “NICHT” event, held at one of the private schools in Joburg last week.  No offence to the school itself, but it was one of the worst shows I have ever been to.  It was supposed to be a “laser” show.  Not sure if you can call a laser just arbitrarily being waved around a “Show”.  Laser shows work best when the patterns or images are reflected or bounced off of a surface or smoke is used to enhance the beams – there was not any particular surface which the lasers were aimed at.  If the beams hit the trees or roofs of the surrounding buildings, it was pure coincidence.  Regardless of the Laser show itself, I think all parents and students had a pleasant evening (even though it was quite cold).  It was well attended and well organised.

Son no 3 had today off from school – not sure why – Jewish holiday or something like that.  Anyway he and a few others from his class had to prep for a drama practical – they are writing scripts and filming etc.  So I got suckered into playing Mom’s Taxi – started off with dropping him off at school for 9.30am – they had to film a short scene there which would take around 30 minutes.  I anticipated it taking a little longer so went shopping until I received the obligatory SMS informing me they were finished – got the SMS 2 hours later.  I then had to cart the 7 of them to one of the students homes for the rest of the filming session and of course had to collect some of them later and drop them off at their homes.  My son clearly forgot I work for a living!

Bought 3 dresses whilst shopping – was looking for a LBD for an event later this month.  Ended up taking all 3 as I could not make my mind up (Guess the 2 hours were not a total waste of time).  Tried them all on for hubby and he likes all 3 – so not sure which one I will wear.  May have to have a dress up session with my daughter-in-law and see what she thinks.

Otherwise I am looking forward to the weekend and putting my feet up – and perhaps even an afternoon sleep on Saturday!

If music be the food of love…..

We usually listen to Son no 3’s Blackberry streaming via Bluetooth to my car kit in the mornings on the way to school. (Don’t you just love technology – look Ma, no wires!).

Anyway, this morning he changes the track and asks me if I knew what movie this piece of music was from. So I think for a moment and say it is from the nightclub scene in XXX.  He says no, but I am close – it is from another movie with a club scene. So I then blurt out that it is from the opening scene of a vampire movie where everyone is dancing in a club which looks like a basement and the sprinklers switch on and blood comes out of the sprinklers.  He says yes, the movie is called Blade.   It then occurred to me that it is creepy that a middle aged women knows this much about vampire movies.

Typically we listen to my sons playlist which includes, what he referrers to, as New Age Music or Club Music (which I refer to as head banging crap – but that is another story).  Over the years we have managed to introduce him to some of the stuff we grew up with – most of which is being re-mixed into something they relate to nowadays.

Some of our Family favourites are the following artists which are timeless:

  • Queen
  • Meatloaf
  • Soft Cell
  • Stevie Wonder
  • Rod Stewart
  • Prince
  • Kenny Loggins
  • Neil Diamond
  • and various others
Once I have dropped my kids off at school, I get the opportunity to listen to my music.  Typically I am not too fussy but I have my favourites which change on a regular basis – at the moment my favourite song is “Secrets” by One Republic and the other song I really enjoy is “Everybody Loves Me”, by the same artist.  I have to listen to this song at least once in the morning in order to remind myself that I am loved by all, with no strings attached.  Yes, my kids tell me regularly that they love me, but this is usually followed by batting eye-lids and the word PLEASE!

Non Memorable week

Time for another post.  Nothing memorable has happened in the last week or so but thought I would ramble on anyway…

Saw a man on my street corner on Tuesday morning whilst on the school run – he was just standing there with a crowbar.  Thought this looked odd – normal people don’t walk around with crowbars.  So I decided to call it in to 10111.

A lady answered the call – did not understand English very well.  I told her I saw a man on the street corner with a crowbar and I thought it looked suspicious.  She did not know what the word “suspicious” meant and asked me to explain – I tried but she still did not get the meaning – she then asked me to hold while she asked someone else.  I realised I was wasting my time and put the phone down.

I called my other half who was still at home and asked him to go onto our community association website and look up who their emergency contact was and then to please call them.  He called the number and got through to a police vehicle in our neighbourhood.  When I returned back from the school run about 20 minutes later – I noticed at least 3 police vehicles patrolling in my area – so I was very impressed with the service received from our local police.  Pity about the service from the 10111 number – I would hate to call in an actual emergency!

Went to a women’s networking dinner on Tuesday evening – a whole bunch of women get together once a month at a restaurant and network – swap business cards etc.  Also get loads of give-aways from some of the companies.

Business has still been slow but there is a definite improvement on the number of calls we are getting so hopefully business will pick up and we can start making some money again.  Been a seriously shit year for business.  Have 3 possible events happening over the November / December period – hoping at least one of them will confirm.  Pity we can only do one of them as they are in different cities – Joburg, Durban or Abu Dhabi.  So let’s hold thumbs.

Otherwise we are doing an event for the Tambo Foundation later in October and an event for the 15th Anniversary of the signing of the SA Constitution later in the year at Constitution Hill.  Usually we would stay away from these types of events as they are far smaller than what we would usually handle, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Son no 3 decided to do some hardware upgrades on his PC – meant he was unable to play games on it for a day whilst new games / drivers etc etc downloaded.  After twiddling his thumbs for most of the day, he suddenly twigged that he could play X-Box.  So the X-box has made a comeback in the house with my 2 boys once again spending time in the TV room – been months since this room was used.

Boys went to the Rage Expo this morning – came back an hour later very disappointed – this exhibition seems to get worse and worse each year.

I was toying with going to SEXPO tomorrow – will see how I feel then.  The problem is that if you go too early, there is no atmosphere and if you go later on, it is too busy.  Decisions, decisions!
