Winter is Coming

I know most of my fellow bloggers are going into summer now so I thought I would give you a glimpse into South Africa going into winter.

As we are based in the Southern Hemisphere, we have summer at Christmas and Winter in July.

I live in Sandton, Johannesburg and we get the most beautiful blue winter skies.   We generally don’t get any rain in winter (Except for this week as it’s been pissing it down for days).  So although it gets rather cold over night, settling at around zero degrees Celsius, the days warm up to around 18 degrees Celsius.   Most days are very comfortable but we do get the odd cold spell where it really is freezing.  We don’t get any snow out here but we have had the odd sprinkling of what we would describe as snow but probably isn’t.

Our little bit of “snow” a few years back

I have a beautiful tree just outside my house which keeps my lounge and bedrooms lovely and cool in Summer and it loses all its leaves in winter and allows the light and warmth in.

Although our winters are reasonably mild here, I hate the cold.

  1. I love where I live but the cold is hard to take at times. I have only lived where there are four distinct seasons and winter is the longest one… lol

  2. There's no place on earth that has winters as long and as cold as the flaming UK. Today was really nice and mild with the sun beaming, but that's just today, and that's right now as any moment things can change and I'm not joking. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether or not we will have a summer this year. Funny enough, I just presumed that you would have hot weather all the year round, so I'm surprised that you get cold weather at any time. I just can't even imagine the leaves falling off the trees too, let alone a sprinkling of snow. Just goes to show how much I know about Africa. Thanks for the lesson Lanthie 🙂

  3. Girl I am so FASCINATED by your life. Look at your gorgeous yard! Is it cheaper or more expensive to live in South Africa than most places? And how…how do you handle having Christmas in summer? That's…just sick.

  4. Hi Therese.Only ever experienced Christmas in summer so it would be odd to have a white Christmas for me.South Africa is quite beautiful and can be expensive. It depends on where you live and the lifestyle you lead.

  5. It's finally getting nice here in NYC as Spring has showed up. Sunny and in the 60's. When summer hits it gets all kind of hot and humid here. Looks like you have a very nice place!
